Student Expectations
At Blackwell it is hoped that each child will develop a positive self-concept which is reflected in their relationships with others. In continuation of the positive learning environment we will follow this discipline policy.

Peace Builders Guidelines

Peace Builders Praise People by giving compliments because it makes people feel better and more good things happen
Peace Builders Give up put-downs because put-downs are hurtful and cause people to become angry
Peace Builders Seek wise people as friends and advisors to get help and direction for making better choices and decisions
Peace Builders Notice and speak up about hurts you cause because being honest and admitting what you did wrong, makes people trust you more
Peace Builders Right wrongs to show you are really sorry and that you will not do mean things anymore

School Rules:
We will show...

  • Respect for Others
  • Respect for Learning
  • Respect for Safety
  • Respect for Property
  • Respect for Rules and Laws in the adult world

    We believe…
That people who are honored, valued, and respected, learn to honor, value and respect others.
That when students are responsible for their own learning and behavior, they will feel successful.
That staff, teachers, and parents need to guide children to learn to be accountable and responsible for their learning at home and school.

    Discipline Policy Procedures:
Following these expectations will help children be successful as students and people. If a student fails to abide by school rules, the following process will be followed:

    Written Reminder Slips

  • If a school rule is violated, a staff member will issue a Written Reminder Slip and a natural consequence, including a discussion with the student about unsafe or discourteous behavior. The Written Reminder needs to be signed by the child and his/her parent or guardian and returned the following day.
  • If a second rule violation occurs, a Written Reminder will be issued to the student. The student may be asked to spend a recess period in the office/classroom, as a time out from the recess period. The student is required to take the Written Reminder home. The slip needs to be signed by the student and his/her parent or guardian and returned to school the following day.

    Communication Slips

  • If a third violation of the school rules or a serious/severe offense occurs, the student will receive a Communication Slip, which needs to be signed by their parents. They will spend time during lunch recess(es) completing a peace treaty. The student will conference with a staff member in the “Solution Zone” to brainstorm ways to increase the peace. The student will complete the Peace builders Treaty, have it signed by their parent, principal, and or counselor, their teacher and any student who was wronged by their actions.
  • If a second Communication Slip is issued, the same consequences occur as with the first Communication Slip.
  • If a third Communication Slip is issued, a conference with the student, his/her parents, and the Principal/Counselor will be arranged to meet and seek solutions to the problem.
  • A student receiving four Communication Slips will be assigned in-house suspension, out-of-school suspension and/or recess restriction. Serious/Severe Clause: Behaviors that are serious or severe in nature may result in the issuing of a communication slip without written warnings and will result in more immediate discipline action such as loss of recess, in-school suspension, or temporary removal from school.

    Serious & Severe Behaviors Include:
  • Inappropriate language (swearing)
  • Harassment (including sexual harassment and severe put-downs)
  • Fighting/rough play/hurting others
  • Throwing inappropriate objects
  • Spitting (on another person)
  • Disrespect/disobeying adult
  • Weapons at school, including laser pens
  • Out of designated area
  • Damaging property
  • Chronic breaking of rules
  • Any illegal activities
  • Threatening to harm students or staff and/or threatening to damage property

    Natural Consequences
It is our goal that natural consequences be used to help children learn to take responsibility for their behavior and understand the results of their behavior. As the result of inappropriate behavior, a student may be asked to participate in an activity. (e.g. If a student writes on building walls, he/she would be asked to clean the walls. A student who throws rocks or bark chips from a play area would be asked to pick-up or sweep it up.)
