Art at Lakeview
Sponsored by Lakeview PTSA

The Lakeview PTSA provides the Art Enrichment Program for Lakeview students. They accomplish this by providing art docents to lead art lessons during school hours and by funding art supplies and other art-related events.

What is Lakeview Art Enrichment?
Lakeview Elementary does not employ a professional art teacher, so the Lakeview PTSA provides the Art Enrichment Program with funds for art supplies, compensation for a visiting artist, the annual Art Walk, and professional workshops for art docents. We are so fortunate to have enthusiastic administrative and teacher support for art at Lakeview. Combine that with our incredible art room, generous PTSA funding and a creative, dedicated art docent corps, and we have the opportunity to actively support arts education and the vibrancy it brings to Lakeview.

Who exactly are the art docents?
Art docents are parents who have a desire to explore art with kids. There’s no special teaching or art experience required...just a willingness to try something new!

What are the art docents teaching this year?
This year’s focus is on the elements of art that consist of line, shape, color, form, texture, space and value. Through our monthly study of each element, students at every grade level will understand the fundamentals so that they can better understand the incredible beauty of art!

What’s the upside of being an art docent?
The kids really love art and they especially love that parents take time to come in and teach it and explore it with them! As a docent you get to see kids shine in a different arena. Also, working on art with kids is a way to nurture your creative side and get a little messy!

Where do the art docents come up with lessons?
Art Enrichment co-chairs Lisa Rudolph, Katy Basnaw, and Beth Day have compiled years of successful lessons for the docents. Docents will be provided with one monthly lesson and will be encouraged to work with other docents at their grade level to create the other monthly lesson.

How big of a time commitment is being an art docent?
Teach two lessons monthly, prep the art room in advance and clean up afterward. Recruiting multiple docents for each classroom helps… many hands make light work, especially in the art room!

I might be interested in becoming an art docent. What do I do?
Contact Katy or Beth or come to one of the art docent information meetings.
